Annika Sorenstam has been named captain of the European team for next year’s Solheim Cup – the female equivalent of the Ryder Cup.
The 45-year old Swede – arguably the most talented golfer of her generation – has played eight Solheim Cups with Europe, winning the 2000 and 2003 editions.
She shares the European record of 22 victories in the competition only with England great Laura Davies.
Europe will attempt to wrestle back the trophy from the US at Iowa’s Des Moines Golf Club in August, 2017.
Sorenstam has 93 professional wins to her name including well as ten major championship titles.
She is also the winner of a record eight Player of the Year awards and six Vare Trophies given to the LPGA player with the lowest seasonal scoring average.
