Former Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has died of cancer at the age of 46.

A controversial character, he gained international notoriety in 2013, when he admitted smoking crack during his time in office. A storm of scandals involving politics, drugs and alcohol followed. Still Ford refused to resign.

The city council eventually took the majority of his power away from him, reducing his position to that of a figurehead.

His popularity remained high with hundreds of people lining up for his autograph or to have a photo taken with him.

He withdrew from the mayoral race in Canada’s largest city in 2014, when he was diagnosed with liposarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

In September, 2015, he declared himself cancer-free, but the next month was hospitalised once again when two tumours were found on his bladder.
