The five people who died when their whale-watching ship capsized off the west coast of Canada were all British nationals.

UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed the news.

One person is still missing.

The vessel sent a distress signal from a position eight miles off the coast of Tofino at 5pm local time.

A community based on environmental tourism

Tofino is a community of around 2,000 people on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

It is a popular destination for whale watchers and surfers.

The coastguard has confirmed that 21 survivors have been found so far. The search is continuing.

Local fishermen and fishing charter companies had joined the rescue effort, with up to 20 boats involved.
