Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is considered an underdog by some, including current US President Barack Obama, who described him in a recent interview as having “the luxury of being a complete long shot” in the race for the White House.
However Sanders appeared optimistic following a rare private meeting with Obama.
“I know there was some discussion the other day about a Politico interview where he’s tipping the scale toward Secretary Clinton. I don’t believe that at all. I think he and the vice president have tried to be fair and even-handed in the process and I expect that they will continue to be that way,” he told press outside the White House.
Obama has not endorsed any candidate outright and recent polls suggest Sanders has seen a surge in popularity.
However, his rival and Obama’s former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is ahead nationally.
The meeting came a matter of days before the first contests to choose the Democratic and Republican nominees will take place in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The third candidate in the Democratic race is former Maryland Governor, Martin O’Malley.
