Hundreds of migrants have been rescued from the Mediterranean Sea while Italy are set to vote on a proposed new mission to tackle the migrant crisis.

A merchant ship rescued over 500 migrants from the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday. Eight migrant bodies were also discovered.

The migrants were found in dinghies, fifteen miles off the coast of Libya.

Italy hopes to manage the migrant crisis on a new Libyan requested mission to support the North Africans coastguard.

Italian ministers briefed parliamentary committees on Tuesday about the cabinet approved mission.

Premier Paolo Gentiloni says the mission could be a turning point in Italy’s bid to manage the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean Sea.

A vote on the proposal could take place later today.
