Duke and Duchess of Cambridge describe visit to Nazi camp in Poland as " terrible reminder of war"
Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have described visiting a former Nazi concentration camp in Poland as a “terrible reminder of the cost of war”.
During their tour the Royal couple were shown discarded shoes, clothing and other personal items, once belonging to prisoners.
They also met five survivors who shared their personal accounts.
Stutthof camp near Gdansk, was set up in 1939 and was the first to be built outside German borders, and one of the last to be liberated by the Allies in 1945.
More than 85,000 people are thought to have died there.
Writing in the camp’s guest book, The Duke and Duchess said: “We were intensely moved by the visit which has been the scene of so much terrible pain, suffering and death.”
The royal visit came on the second day of a goodwill trip aimed at underscoring Britain’s intention to maintain friendly relations with the European Union (EU) after it leaves the bloc. Next stop is Germany and a trip to Berlin.
