Former World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi has come out of retirement to take over the helm of the Chinese national football team.
The 68-year-old who guided his home nation Italy to the World Cup title ten years ago retired from management after winning a third consecutive league title with Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande in 2014.
He also steered the club to the Asian Champions League crown while he won five Serie A titles and the Champions League with Juventus.
Lippi is China’s third coach in a year and replaces Gao Hongbo, who stepped down earlier this month after a defeat against Uzbekistan left the country bottom of Group A in the Asian qualifying pool for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Lippi’s first game in charge is a World Cup qualifier against Qatar on November 15.
