Liverpool have benched their France international player Mamadou Sakho following a failed drugs test.

The English Premier League side confirmed that the 26-year old defender had not been officially suspended but will not be considered for first-team selection pending an investigation by European football’s governing body UEFA.

It has been reported that Sakho failed the test after the club’s Europa League victory over Manchester United on 17 March.

It is believed the player tested positive for a type of fat burner used for weight loss.

Sakho, who moved to Liverpool from Paris Saint Germain in 2013, is expected to request his B sample be tested.

He could be facing a lengthy ban that would rule him out of the European Championships this summer that take place in his native France.
