US horror film director Wes Craven has died.

He was perhaps best known for creating Freddie Krueger’s “Nightmare on Elm Street” and the “Scream” franchise, although his first feature “The Last House on the Left” has achieved cult status among horror film fans.

A family statement said Craven had been suffering from brain cancer.

Despite his illness he had been working on a new film “The Girl in the Photographs” which is due to premiere at next month’s (September 2015) Toronto Film Festival.
