Police said the children were on their way to kindergarten when they were suddenly attacked.

Three children have been injured in a knife attack that occurred as they walked to kindergarten in the city of Zurich, Swiss police have reported.

The three five-year-old boys were taken to hospital for their injuries, according to a police statement, with one seriously injured.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack, for which police have not yet given a motive. Police described him as a 23-year-old Chinese national.

The incident occurred shortly after noon on Tuesday in the city's Oerlikon district.

The children were being accompanied by a kindergarten worker who reportedly overwhelmed the assailant with help of another man and restrained him until police arrived.
