The European Union will address the problem of falling milk and pork prices at an extraordinary meeting of the EU Agriculture Council on September 7

The European Union will address the problem of falling milk and pork prices at an extraordinary meeting of the EU Agriculture Council on September 7 – the Commissioner for Agriculture announced in Brussels.

Phil Hogan did not go into detail about the possible measures when he spoke to euronews:

“We are not going to reintroduce quotas. And I think we still have enormous opportunities in markets especially in Asia and Africa in the future. And we want to be able to take advantage of that. But we are going to have short that price volatility and I indicated that all along since I became commissioner last November.”

Earlier this summer, Belgian and French farmers demonstrated against falling prices in the diary sector.

They called on the EU to introduce a temporary quota system until the market stabilises.

Unions had already announced a protest in Brussels for the 7th of September, when the EU agriculture ministers will discuss the issue.
