It's unclear how the young cat managed to climb up into the branches but was later tranquilised and brought to the zoo in Santiago, to be released at a later date.

A wild puma ran up a tree in Chile and remained there for 15 hours before it was rescued.

It was not clear how the 30-kg young male cat, native to the Andes and surrounding Americas, wound up in the city of Santiago. Rescuers suspected that it was scared by city life — dogs and people — and jumped up into the tree for safety.

Rescuers tranquillised the puma before it fell down from the tree, missing the safety mattress on landing.

He was later taken to Santiago zoo and will be released at a later date.
