A court in Malta has charged three men with the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the investigative journalist who was killed by a car bomb last month.

The suspects, who are Maltese nationals, include brothers George and Alfred Degiorgio, and Vincent Muscat. All three pleaded not guilty at a hearing late on Tuesday.

Investigators believe the journalist who wrote a popular blog exposing crime and corruption on the Mediterranean island, was killed by a remote-controlled explosion of TNT

Police arrested 10 men on Monday in connection with the killing. The other seven have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Maltese media say the authorities homed in on the suspects following telephone intercepts.

The murder of Caruana Galizia on October 16 sent shock waves across both Malta and the wider EU, raising deep concerns over the rule of law in the bloc's smallest nation.
