Rescue workers in Indonesia have failed to save four whales that beached off Aceh province.

The mammals died of injuries and exhaustion after becoming stranded on Ujong Kareng beach.

They were part of a group of ten sperm whales that got stuck on Monday, attracting hundreds of onlookers in the process.

The remaining whales were eventually refloated and led out to sea.

Authorities say whale pods follow a group leader and can become stranded if the leader swims too close to shore due to sickness or other reasons.
