French President Emmanuel Macron addresses the UN general assembly in New York
French President Emmanuel Macron faced a major diplomatic test as he made his maiden speech at the UN general assembly in New York.
Just a few hours before his address, he told reporters he would focus on subjects including humanitarian crises.
Macron took to the floor just after US leader Donald Trump and took a much softer line.
The US president took a hostile rhetoric when it came to North Korea’s ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests, saying the US may have to “totally destroy” the country.
Macron, on the other hand, said that France would not turn its back on negotiations concerning North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
While Trump blasted the Iran nuclear deal, introduced by his predecessor Barack Obama, the French president said: “Not respecting it (the deal) would be irresponsible, because it is a good accord that is essential to peace.”
