Georgia's record-breaking congressional election will be decided today.

The most-expensive US congressional race in history is coming to a head in Atlanta, Georgia today (June 20), with some analysts labelling it a referendum on divisive President Donald Trump.

Democrat Jon Ossoff is up against Republican Karen Handel in a campaign that is estimated to have cost a record 56 million dollars in total, or around 50 million euros.

Things took a sour last-minute turn in recent days when a conservative group ran a television advert that appeared to link Ossoff to a shooting spree in Virginia. Both candidates have condemned the ad.

Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District has been staunchly Republican for decades, yet Donald Trump only won by one percentage point in last November’s presidential vote.

Polls suggest Tuesday’s run-off election is almost neck-and-neck. The Democrat appears to have a narrow edge, with an estimated 49.6 percent to Handel’s 47 percent.

Osseff almost won the seat outright in April, when he garnered 48.1 percent of the vote. 50 percent was needed for a first-round victory.
