The English clubs are said to be the focus of HMRC's crackdown on tax fraud in football.
British tax officials raided English football clubs on Wednesday morning and arrested several people as part of a fraud investigation.
Several media said the raids targeted West Ham United and Newcastle United.
Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley was said to have been arrested – just two days after his team was promoted to the Premier League.
HMRC did not identify the clubs targeted, only saying it raided premises in the north east and south east of England, and that its ongoing investigation related to income tax and national insurance fraud.
It said the probe involved tax authorities in France, where arrests and searches were also made.
HMRC is known to have been investigating the dealings of football clubs, and their billion-euro transfers and image rights deals. Newcastle United in particular have recently signed a series of players from French clubs.
