They are mayors. They took a stand against the mafia and are now threatened. A network has been established in Italy to help and connect them: Avviso Pubblico (Public Warning). It mainly offers a moral support to administrators who fight organised crime in their towns.
In 2015, a public official was threatened by mafia groups every 18 hours on average. According to Avviso Pubblico mafia groups used 479 threats against public officials in 2015, a third more than the previous year. Among the methods used to deliver these threats: arson attacks, dead animals or bullets through the post, death threats…
Since 1991, 212 town councils have been dissolved for mafia infiltration.
In 40 years, the mob has murdered 132 local administrators.
