Taliban-linked militant leader Umar Narai, the alleged mastermind of the Peshawar school massacre, has been killed by a American drone strike, according to US and Pakistani officials.

US defense department spokesman Peter Cook confirmed that an air strike was carried out in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province on 9 July, killing Narai and four other militants.

The director general of the Pakistani army’s media division General Asim Bajwa reported the death of Narai, also known as Khalifa Umar Mansoor or Khalid Khurasani, on Twitter.

As leader of the Tarq Gidar group, a faction linked to the Pakistani Taliban, Narai is alleged to have planned the 2014 attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar. More than 150 people died, most of them children.
