Michel Platini has failed in his bid to overturn his 90-day ban from football’s world governing body FIFA.

The Frenchman, who heads European soccer’s UEFA, was suspended for allegedly accepting a “disloyal payment of nearly 2 million euros was upheld by the court of arbitration for sport (CAS).

CAS, which seeks to settle sports-related disputes, left the existing restriction in force until it expires on Jan. 5, 2016 on the grounds that it does not cause irreparable harm, according to a statement.

Platini was the clear favourite to succeed Sepp Blatter until they were both questioned by Swiss authorities in September. They both face possible life bans when they appear before the FIFA ethics committee at its headquarters in Zurich next week.
