The festive period has begun in Hungary and one charity is hoping to make it the most wonderful time of the year for hundreds of thousands of children.

Between December 4 and 20, Santa’s Factory accepts donations of canned food, toys, books and clothes from all over the country.

The Red Cross then delivers so-called Christmas packages to those in need.

Endre Zsolnai, the founder and organiser of Santa’s Factory, told euronews:

“Last year we could reach 348 thousand children. I think this is a huge number,” said the organiser of the operation.

Now in its eleventh year, Santa’s Factory attracts volunteers from all over the world.

According to Eurostat, in 2014 some twenty-six million children across the European Union were at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Hungary is in the top three worst-performing countries in this sector.
