British Prime Minister David Cameron has hosted German Chancellor Angela Merkel for talks at his country retreat Chequers.

Dominating the low-profile meeting were the influx of migrants into Europe, the threat from ISIL and the UK’s future in the EU.

More than half a million people have fled to Europe this year prompting bitter disputes about how the EU member states should share out their responsibility.

Cameron has promised to hold a referendum on his country’s membership of the EU by the end of 2017.

The two leaders concluded that the UK and Germany should work even more closely together
