US President Barack Obama has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting America’s Arab allies in the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The six-nation Gulf GCC is made up of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Speaking from Camp David, Maryland, Obama said that an international nuclear deal with Iran would not leave them more vulnerable.
“I am reaffirming our iron-clad commitment to the security of our Gulf partners,” he announced. “As we have declared in our joint statement, the United States is prepared to work jointly with GCC member states to deter and confront any external threat to any GCC state’s territorial integrity that is inconsistent with the UN charter.”
Meanwhile negotiators from Iran and six world powers continue talks about Iran’s nuclear programme in a hotel in Vienna.
A final agreement is to be reached by an end of June (2015) deadline.
