Jordan has confirmed that ISIL militants shot down a coalition warplane over Syria and captured the pilot.

Jordan has confirmed that the pilot of one of its warplanes was captured after ISIL militants shot down his aircraft over the Syrian province of Raqqa.

The militant group posted photographs on the Internet showing the pilot being taking prisoner. Soaking wet and wearing only a white t-shirt, the man is able to stand but can be seen bleeding from his mouth.

ISIL also have photos of what they claim to be the pilot’s ID, showing him to be a 26-year-old Jordanian national.

Coalition aircraft have been striking ISIL since August and regularly bomb targets in Raqqa province, which has been under militant control for months.

Sixty nations have joined the coalition, including American, European and Gulf states.
