Italian police have searched the house of Rome’s ex-mayor and arrested 37 people in a major anti-Mafia operation.
Gianni Alemanno was a minister for agriculture in Silvio Berlusconi’s government between 2001 and 2006, and the capital’s mayor from 2008 until 2013.
“I have always fought Mafia and criminal organisations, openly and without clemency. I will show that I am completely uninvolved,” Alemanno said in a statement.
Those detained, including entrepreneurs and local politicians, are reportedly among 100 people suspected of corruption and fraud.
The presumed head of the group, Massimo Carminati, is a former member of the NAR (the Armed Revolutionary Nuclei), an outlawed far-right organisation active in the late 1970s.
